Direct Planting
Apply before planting between February and April. Lightly mix the potato fertiliser into the soil and work it into the soil to a depth of about 10-15cm (4-6 inches). This will provide a steady supply of nutrients throughout the growing season.
Dig a trench 10- 15 cm (4-6 in) deep. Place potato seeds (shoots uppermost) in the trench 30cm (12 in) apart and then cover with soil from either sides of the trench.
Potatoes will then need water when the top inch of soil feels dry. One inch of water per week is usually enough.
Potato Barrels and Other Containers
Use container 30cm or larger with good drainage. Fill container with a high quality multipurpose compost.
Place seed potatoes 15cm (6 in) below the container rim. Fill to top of the rim with compost that has been lightly mixed with the potato fertiliser. Place containers in a sunny position and protect from frost.
In spring/summer months, potatoes in containers should be watered regularly, about once every day or two, so that the top 1–2 inches of soil is consistently moist but not soggy. You should water deeply enough so that some water drains out of the bottom of the container.
